Anyone who loves cricket knows that Andy Ganteaume batted one time in a Test match, scored 112, and then never played Test cricket again. He has a Test average higher than Don Bradman. The story of the cricketer who holds this unique record, and how it happened the way it did, is abundantly worth telling. When the story is told by the man himself its fascination, importance and authenticity is multiplied. Along with much else, he refutes conclusively the misconception, not to say smear, that in that expert and assured debut Test innings he Batted "too slowly". This is absolutely required reading. But his account of this extraordinary cricketing episode is only a part ofAndy Ganteaume's wonderfully interesting, revealing and forthright autobiography. My Story. Andy is eighty-six years old. He has lived a varied and satisfying life and reading what he has to say about it all is a delight. Especially vivid are his portliaits of persons he has known well, many of them treasured friends, some of them famous personalities and others with whom sharp daggers were drawn. These vignettes and Andy's lively memories of events and encounters in Trinidad and abroad capture the essence of his life and times. I loved the book. It is the story of an independent, intelligent and honest man who in his long and fruitful career in cricket as player, coach, selector and manager achieved full West Indian stature by any reckoning. Ian McDonald. Author ofthe Humming-Bird Tree, poet, Fellow ofthe Royal Society ofLiterature, has written extensively on West Indies Cricketfor regional and international publications. |
