SAVE OUR SCHOOL(S)!

Posted by Editor in Education

By Gabrielle Maraj

By recommending the closing of 21 schools throughout the city both Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein are set on creating a crisis in education. In spite of the poor resources provided to these schools by the Department of Education many of them like mine, Metropolitan Corporate Academy, have been providing sterling services to students. What has the NYC Department of Education done to help these so-called failing schools? Instead of listening to what students and staff need in order to really improve our education, the Chancellor simply finds a quick and easy solution by deciding to close schools. We can’t allow this to happen for it would only further retard our progress.

Parents, students, and teachers of M.C.A. are calling upon the community to come out in large numbers to a public hearing on Thursday January 14 at 6:00 PM at 362 Schemerhorn Street and continue to express strong displeasure with this latest move by the authorities to hurt our community.

The movement to prevent Metropolitan Academy from closing was started on December 14, 2009 when parents, staff, students, alumni, teachers and officials of the United Federation of Teachers rallied and protested against Chancellor Joel Klein’s recommendation to phase out M.C.A in the next three years.

On a mild afternoon to protest, outraged students stepped forth playing guitars and drums while dancing and screaming chants along the blocks of Flatbush and Atlantic Avenues in downtown Brooklyn. Students kept up the protest for more than an hour as passersby, in buses and cars, after reading our placards and posters, saluted and honked their horns in support. It was truly a scene to behold and participate in. After asking the question "What do you think about M.C.A.’s closing?" a student shouted "SAVE M.C.A!" And another replied, "That's why we're protesting!"

Join us in our fight to keep M.C.A. open by attending the public forum on January 14 at 6:00 PM @ 362 Schemerhorn Street, Brooklyn and write a comment in support of our school and send it to HS.Proposals@schools.nyc.gov

After a four-day surveillance rendezvous of Jamaican Grammy-nominated, reggae, deejay Buju Banton, undercover federal officers nabbed drugs, cash and at least one weapon to find the artist in a Florida lock-up.

Reportedly the sting netted Banton and two accomplices who allegedly attempted to buy cocaine from undercover federal agents. Banton could get up to 20 years and may not get bail if a federal judge believes he would be a flight risk.

Oprah's Transition To Own Stirs Global Reaction

Posted by Vinette K. Pryce in The Pryce is Write

Millions of Americans who regularly watch the Oprah Winfrey TV show almost accept the daily broadcasts as a given. A staple repeated in homes all across the nation, for almost quarter of a century, the Harpo presentation has been omnipresent, entertaining, educational and sometimes controversial. That in two years, after the 25th anniversary edition, the hour-long talk show will no longer reliably mark every weekday in TV Guide seems to be sending some in a kind of frenzy not even the talk queen ever imagined. “Who will take her place?”
“Who can fill those big shoes?” “Who can we rely on to explain issues and things to the nation?” Those are some of the concerns some are expressing after last week’s announcement that Sept, 2011 will be Winfrey’s swansong from daytime talk TV.
“Oprah explained menopause,” Claudette Jones, a fan said. “She helped me confront my weight issues,” Georgia Blake added.
“She is the one who gave us Dr. Oz,” another individual chimed.

Broadway Greets Nigerian "Fela"

Posted by Vinette K. Pryce in The Pryce is Write

Walking into the Eugene O’Neil Theater recently was like walking into the Africa Shrine in Lagos, Nigeria where Fela Anikulap Kuti played infectious Afro-beat, communed with his followers and politicized the ills of his government. Onstage, corrugated sets reflected the tapestry that was magical when I visited the capital more than a decade ago. Missing though were women tending marijuana in huge, flat, weaved baskets. Along with long tables, they busily picked, sorted and separated the leaves as if nurturing a legal commodity. I recalled being fearful and timid that a police raid could land me in one of those awful jails. But it seemed then that I was the only one with such thoughts. It was business as usual for most and police, I was told often steered clear of Fela’s property.

For whatever reason, this year we decided not to take the annual road trip to spend the Thanksgiving holiday with my sister and her family in New Jersey.  We decided to stay in Upstate Rochester, NY and entertain a small group of family and friends.
