Now that Kamla Persad-Bissessar has become Political Leader of the Opposition United National Congress in Trinidad & Tobago, the first woman to win the office, will she become the nation’s next prime minister and the first female to win that office?

That’s the question asked. First she will have to become the Opposition Leader in the nation’s Parliament, a position normally hold by the political leader of the party. Although Persad-Bissessar has defeated UNC founder, political leader and former Prime Minister Basdeo Pandy for the party’s leadership, Panday has not relinquished his position as Parliamentary Opposition Leader.

When, Panday yields the title to Persad-Bissessar, she will then have to lead her party’s successfully in the next national elections in order to become prime minister of Trinidad & Tobago.
